Dental Sealants
Think of dental sealants like little raincoats for your teeth—they help keep out the “bad stuff” like food, plaque, and cavity-causing bacteria. They’re quick to apply, painless, and super effective, especially for kids and teens still learning the ropes of brushing. At O’Shea Family Dental, sealants are one of our favorite ways to stop cavities before they start.
What Are Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings we apply to the grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (your molars). These are the spots where food loves to hide, and toothbrushes don’t always reach.
Once applied, the sealant forms a smooth, protective barrier that helps stop cavities from forming. While they’re an excellent preventative measure, sealants don’t replace regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. Think of them as extra protection for the areas that need it most.
Who are Sealants For?
We recommend sealants for the following:
- Kids and teens: Usually around ages 6–14 when those permanent molars come in
- Cavity-prone adults: Yep, grown-ups can get them too!
- Anyone with deep grooves in their molars: Some teeth just need a little extra backup
If you’re not sure if sealants are right for you or your child, we’ll check during your exam and give you the lowdown.
What to Expect During Treatment
The process of getting dental sealants is quick, easy, and completely painless! No needles. No numbing. No stress.
Here’s how it works:
- We clean the tooth
- A special gel is applied to help the sealant stick
- We “paint” on the sealant and use a light to harden it
- Done—in just a few minutes per tooth
Why Should You or Your Child Get Sealants?
According to the CDC, sealants can prevent 80% of cavities in the back teeth. This is the spot where 9 out of 10 cavities happen. That's a big deal for little smiles.
Sealants are also beneficial by providing the following benefits:
- Help prevent cavities
- Save time, money, and future dental work
- Last for several years with proper care
